**Please note: this label can be confusing concerning vintages. The front label has two years written on it, 1938 and 2018, neither of which are the vintage of this wine.  The actual vintage is written on the BACK label, which is currently 2015.

90pts Wine Enthusiast

Toasted coconut, cedar box and cherry-chocolate aromas on the nose give way to a palate lush with cherries, blackberries and strawberries, with a candied-red-apple sheen. Smooth, polished tannins and forgiving acid lead to a berries and cream finish.

90pts James Suckling

Lots of ripe damson and cola character to this ebullient wine that’s full-to medium-bodied with firm tannins, creating a fruity, though slightly unyielding finish. No real length for now. Try in 2024.

Winery Notes

In the glass, it reveals a deep, dense, and impenetrable amaranth red color. The intensely fruity bouquet impresses with its hints of ripe red berries, predominantly black cherry and blackcurrant jam, fading into finer and more complex notes of vanilla and caramel. On the palate, it reveals a strong, structured yet elegant character, tempered by soft, well-integrated tannins. A wine with a full-bodied and persistent finish, with distinct hints of dried fruit, bitter chocolate, and Arabica coffee, perfect for pairing with mushroom-based dishes such as risotto and scallops, braised meats and game, and mature cheeses.

Winery Description

The Barbanera family has been producing first-class wines for over 80 years. For the milestone anniversary in 2018, the Barbanera family pressed the Gigino 80 Anniversario Toscana. Gigino was the nickname of Luigi Barbanera, son of the winery's founders. The grapes are picked by hand in the cool morning hours and slowly fermented at cool temperatures and then macerated to extract the maximum of color and natural aromas from the grapes.
